Article 25
By Steven J. Hogan
This is not so much an article to read as it is a resource to use. A long time ago, back in the early 70’s, God taught me the importance of feeding my soul with His Word. I have to admit, I am so thankful that He got me into the habit of daily reading His Word, of thinking about it, praying over it, doing it, and it then becoming a part of my life. There’s no doubt that one of the main reasons I am going on for Christ is because of God’s Word. I love God and I love His Word and I couldn’t make it in life as a Christian without it. Through it, God teaches me, leads me, comforts me, motivates me, instructs me, warns me and protects me. By God’s grace, I have learned to believe His truths, obey His commands, heed His warnings, and hold on to His promises. Every morning I’ve learned to get up, and first get into God’s word, and have my most important meal of the day.
What follows is a long list of verses. These are most of my favorite verses, and ones I’ve read and thought of time and time again for the past 45 years. I first wrote this list for myself, so that I could more easily remember the word God had given me. But then I made it available to my friends, and then to my church. Then this past week, I thought it would be good to make it available to you. (You will notice that I like the Psalms).
When you start reading it, you’ll see that it is a randomized list of verses. I did this on purpose. There have been times in my life when I’d read a section of these verses every day, and I’d go through the entire list, and then I’d start all over again. There have been times when I was spiritually lethargic or discouraged, and then I’d start to read through some of the verses. And invariably, I wouldn’t get very far in the list before God would quickly spiritually pick me up and get me back on my feet. By His Word, He’d encourage, refresh and energize me. I can’t tell you how many times God has used these verses to help me get up and keep on going for Him. And if God can use this list to be a help for your own life, and for the lives of others, then I say “Amen.”
My prayer is that God’s word becomes a part of your soul. “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being” (Psalm 51:6). You need God’s word – you have to have it. You can’t make it, you can’t survive without it. God’s Word needs to become a part of your life. You need to learn to go to certain books, certain chapters, and certain verses in the Bible, trusting God to use His word to build you, to instruct you, to lead you, and to protect you. And sometimes you will go back to the same verse or same passage. And that’s fine, that’s good, if that’s what you need to do.
One more thing – I believe you all know that we’re in the end times, and that it won’t be long before the return of Christ. And I hope you realize that there’ll be some rough days ahead before Christ’s coming and the rapture of the church. Paul said it simply, “Through many tribulations, we must enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). But then we’ll come to “great tribulation” days, and the road will be even rougher, and life will be even tougher. Now’s the time to get God’s word in your life, and for His word to become a part of your life. Now’s the time, in the calm before the storm, to learn the key truths, commands, promises and warnings found in God’s word. Don’t wait, please don’t wait. Finally, remember the Lord’s instruction to Joshua, “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.” Joshua 1:8
