Article 54

By Steven J. Hogan

A primary purpose of this blog site is to tell you what the Bible says will happen before the coming of Christ. What we learn is that life on earth will be extremely difficult for Christians in those last few years before Christ’s return. There will be birth pains – false Christs, wars, famines, earthquakes, and plagues (Matt. 24:4-8). Then the Antichrist will come, and he will greatly persecute Christians all over the world (Matt. 24:9.) For Christians, it will be the most difficult time ever. Matt. 24:21-22

You not only need to know what will be happening in the end-times, but how you are to live for the Lord during these extremely trying times, especially when there’s great persecution. And the most important thing is your relationship with God, being loved, led, and satisfied by Him, and knowing, loving, trusting, and obeying Him. “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord” (Ps. 27:4). “Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth.” Ps. 73:25

Your Christian life is to be centered and focused on Christ. Phil. 1:21 sums it up this way – “To live is Christ.” A Christian life without a relationship with Christ is not the Christian life. It’s a life that is empty, hopeless, and godless. Walking closely with God and with Christ is what’s most important, and it’s foundational to everything else in your life. My purpose is to tell you what is going to happen and how can grow in your relationship with God. There’s much in the Bible about this relationship, and how you can be close to God. And what’s helped me the most in the past 50+ years is the book of Psalms.

I love the Psalms. I have read it almost every day of my Christian life. It has been of immense spiritual benefit to me. The truths, the hope, comfort, peace, and strength I get from the Psalms are indescribable, unbelievable, truly divine. Besides salvation, eternal life, and the Holy Spirit, the greatest gift that God has ever given me is His word, and the Psalms is my favorite book in His word, and that’s because it helps me grow in my relationship with Him. As for me, I need the Psalms – I couldn’t live without them.

In this article I’ve written out hundreds of verses specifically about the Psalmist’s relationship with God and, therefore, about your relationship with God. In the Psalms you will find truths about God, Christ, history, the future of the Jews, your future, and the coming kingdom, but the most important subject is your relationship with God. The Psalms give you lots of information about David’s relationship with God, and others too. Why does God do this? Because He wants you to learn from their examples.

So I have gone through the Psalms and written out a great many of these verses – and each of these verses has to do with your relationship with God, specifically your communication with Him, your prayers and praise. God wants you to learn how to be open and transparent with Him, to talk to Him, pray to Him, seek Him, cry out to Him, love Him, listen to Him, and praise Him. And I’m telling you – these verses will help you grow in these areas. But before I list these verses for you, I need to say a few things

1. This list of verses from the Psalms speaks of your relationship with God, but many other kinds of verses are not listed. These can be classified as truths (Ps. 23:1 – “The Lord is my shepherd”), commands (Ps. 100:1 – “Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth”), promises (Ps. 23:6 – “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”), historical (Ps. 78), and eschatological (Ps. 2).

2. The main way to know if a verse is specifically speaking of your relationship with God is if you see the word “I”, “me”, or “mine” (referring to you), being used, and the word “You” or “Your” (referring to God), being used.
3. These verses about your relationship with God speak of despair, loneliness, weakness, fear, anger, anguish, anxiety, and trust, love, joy, peace, and hope. You will also notice that there’s a lot of emotion in these verses, and that’s because we’re emotional beings.

4. A key chapter, my favorite chapter, is Psalm 119. That’s because it relates directly to God’s word, and His word is the primary way I grow in my relationship with God. I read a passage from Ps. 119 every morning, for it motivates me to love God and love His word, and live for Him. I strongly encourage you to read it, study it, and apply it.
5. I have not written out every verse in the Psalms that speaks of your relationship with God, but a vast number of them. When you read the Psalms, you need to find them yourself, and learn from them, seeing how they apply to your own life.

We can talk all day about what’s going to happen in the end-times, and you can know everything there is to know, but most importantly, you need to know the Lord, and His love for you. You need to know how to talk to Him, love Him, pray to Him, and praise Him. I believe that the Psalms is the book, better than any other book in the Bible, that helps you grow in your relationship with God. Here are the verses that I have selected:

Ps. 3:3 – “You are a shield around me, O Lord; You bestow glory on me and lift up my head.” Ps. 4:8 – “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Ps. 5:12 – “Surely, O Lord, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as with a shield.” Ps. 6:4 – “Save me because of Your unfailing love.” Ps. 7:1 – “O Lord My God, in You I have taken refuge; save me from those who purse me, and deliver me.” Ps. 8:4 – “What is man that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for him?” Ps. 9:1 – “I will praise You, O Lord, with all my heart”

Ps. 27:8-9, 11 – “My heart says of You, ‘Seek His face.’ Your face, Lord, I will seek. Do not hide Your face from me, do not turn Your servant away in anger. O Lord my God, I will give You thanks forever.”

Into Your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth… I will be glad and rejoice in Your love, for You saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul… Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief.”

Ps. 36:5-6, 7, 9-11 – “Your love, O Lord reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is the like the mighty mountains, Your justice like the great deep… How priceless is Your unfailing love… For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light. For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see… Be pleased, O Lord to save me…May all who seek to take my life be put to shame… But may all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation say, ‘The Lord be exalted.’… You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.”
